You do not need a professional detailer, or a whole Saturday, to keep your car's interior fresh. With a cordless handheld vacuum, a few microfiber cloths and this checklist, you can clean the inside of most cars in about 30 minutes.
What you need
- A cordless handheld vacuum with a crevice tool and a brush attachment
- Three or four microfiber cloths
- An all-purpose interior cleaner that is safe for plastics and fabric
- Glass cleaner
- A soft detailing brush or a clean, soft paintbrush for vents
- A trash bag
The routine
- Clear it out (3 minutes). Remove trash, loose items and anything that does not live in the car. Check door pockets, cup holders and under the seats.
- Pull the floor mats (3 minutes). Shake them out, then vacuum them outside the car. Wash rubber mats with soapy water and leave them to dry.
- Dust from the top down (5 minutes). Brush air vents, the dashboard and the center console, letting the dust fall to the floor. You will vacuum it up next.
- Vacuum (10 minutes). Start with the seats, using the crevice tool along the seams and between the seats and console. Slide the front seats all the way forward, then back, to reach the carpet underneath. Finish with the floors and the trunk.
- Wipe hard surfaces (5 minutes). Spray cleaner onto a cloth, not directly onto electronics, and wipe the dashboard, steering wheel, gear lever, door panels and cup holders.
- Clean the glass (3 minutes). Use a fresh cloth and glass cleaner on the inside of the windows and mirrors. Wipe in one direction inside and the other direction outside, so you can tell which side any streaks are on.
- Put it back (1 minute). Return the dry mats and keep only the essentials in the car.
Keep it clean between sessions
- Keep a small trash bag in the door pocket and empty it every time you fill up with gas.
- Store a handheld vacuum or a pack of interior wipes in the trunk for quick spills.
- Use all-weather floor mats in winter to catch snow, salt and mud.
- Do a 10-minute vacuum every week, and the full routine once a month.
Choosing a handheld vacuum for the car
Look for strong suction, at least 15 minutes of runtime, a washable filter and a narrow crevice tool. USB-C or 12-volt charging means you can top it up on the go. A light model is easier to hold while you reach under seats and into footwells.
